The Areteioi Canon

“Get straight to doing what nature requires of you, and speak as you see most just and fitting—with kindness, modesty, and sincerity.” – Marcus Aurelius

The Areteioi Canon (derived from the Greek word for virtue) is a curated body of individuals recognized for their embodiment of Jiayan principles, particularly the Ten Virtues. To be named among the Areteioi is to be considered a guidepost in humanity’s evolving understanding of Ji, the order underpinning and connecting all existence.

Each member of the Canon has, in some significant way, contributed to the flourishing of moral insight, spiritual clarity, or ethical civilization. Some pushed humanity forward, igniting transformations in how people perceive themselves, others, and the cosmos. Others lived in quiet integrity, offering their lives as models of virtue in everyday action.

Those admitted into the Canon are recognized as living in alignment with Ji as revealed through a life of ethical intention and effort, the cultivation of wisdom, justice, equanimity, and right livelihood, a commitment to the interdependence and dignity of all beings, and the capacity to awaken others through thought, action, or presence.

Each member of the Canon is matched with a phase in the Cycle of Transience, a poetic reflection of the moral and cosmic order their lives modeled.
